Plus Minus ±
The current situation of Emporiou square in Serres, Greece, has the necessity to be redeveloped as it presents problematic issues regarding mainly the traffic organization and the quality of public space as well as the quality of building facades. The proposed project, PLUS MINUS ±, provides an overall solution for the area.
From the accessibility standpoint, the redevelopment project provides a functional and an efficient roundabout that helps the traffic goes more smoothly, instead of the uncertain current situation.
By doing so, it has been introduced also a strong combined element of pedestrian path and bicycle path that across the whole square with the intention to promote more sustainability in the center of the city. These combined paths want to be the continuity of the pedestrian and bike lanes of the nearby Merarchias street that had been already redeveloped recently.
More sustainability because by having this strong element of pedestrian and bike lanes in the middle of the square, we propose a semi-pedestrianization of the whole area. Private cars are less encouraged to contribute to the traffic, public transportation buses go more efficiently, less pollution in the area, and so on.
In fact, one of main aspects that Emporiou square has to deal with is the significant presence of cars and buses. Being a hub, it is a very busy square with considerable problems about parking. The proposed project suggests the construction of a multilevel underground parking with the aim to free the ground level area from the abusive one.
By designing this, we took into serious consideration the accessibility of each street to provide an efficient service to the city. A more proper bus stop/terminal has been provided as well. It has been integrated with a ‘shelter’ which gives more identity to the space as it hosts also, on the top of it, an elevated hardscape park. With this elevated park we achieved to combine the busy square with an intimate public space which is somehow protected by the noisy surroundings (being at the same time immersed in them) due to its higher level (+4.50m from the street sidewalk level) and trees all around.
Same concept was applied to the softscape park, above the underground parking, but this time the park has been designed at a lower level (-1.00m from the street sidewalk level).
Trees are provided in the whole project also as main shading and cooling system for warmer days.
Other key elements of the proposed projects are the pedestrianization of the street at the north of Emporiou square along which, under the elevated park, we propose boutique shops in order to encourage more the use of this new pedestrian walkway.
The promenade-stairs that lead to the elevated park is another key element of PLUS MINUS ± project. It offers a multifunction space with a wide range of activity use, plus it characterizes the space remarkably.
